Humpback Whales, Omura’s Whales, and Whale Sharks in the Waters of Nosy Be

Nosy Be, Madagascar’s most popular island destination on the northwest coast, offers outstanding whale watching between July and November, when humpback whales migrate north from Antarctica to breed and raise their calves in the warm Indian Ocean. Unlike Sainte-Marie on the east coast, the whale season in Nosy Be runs slightly later – peaking between August and October – giving visitors more flexibility within the travel season.

Nosy Be is also home to one of the world’s most remarkable marine discoveries: in 2016, the largest pod of Omura’s whales ever recorded – 80 whales and calves – was sighted in these waters, attracting international marine biologists and research teams to the area. Additionally, whale sharks – the largest fish in the sea – are regularly encountered here, and some operators offer the rare opportunity to snorkel alongside them.

Departures typically leave from Hell-Ville (Andoany), the main port town of Nosy Be, or from nearby beaches. The surrounding islands of Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Komba, and Nosy Iranja can also be visited on extended full-day trips. Excellent. Highly recommended. We communicated with Mada Assist for several weeks to plan our trip. We finally booked two 4WD vehicles with drivers through them: one for three days in Andasibe and another for ten days in Morondava, Tsingy, and Belo sur Mer. The drivers, Rojo and Louis, were excellent, efficient, yet very safe and punctual. The vehicles were in very good condition and cleaned daily. Truly a positive experience. I would use Mada Assist again without hesitation.
