The Highlights of Sambava

Discover Sambava: The Vanilla Capital of the World

Sambava sits on Madagascar’s northeastern coast as the capital of the Sava Region — an acronym for its four main towns: Sambava, Antalaha, Vohémar, and Andapa. With a population of over 84,000, it’s the gateway to lush rainforest, endless coconut groves, and some of the finest beaches on the Indian Ocean. Here are the key highlights of what you can experience:

1. Marojejy National Park

Around 60 km inland via the RN3b road towards Andapa lies Marojejy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse rainforests in Madagascar. Its rugged massif rises to over 2,100 metres and shelters 12 species of lemurs, including the critically endangered silky sifaka, alongside 275 species of ferns and 120 species of birds.

2. The World’s Vanilla Capital

Sambava and its surrounding Sava Region produce the majority of the world’s vanilla exports. Visitors can tour working vanilla plantations and processing facilities to see how the world’s most prized spice goes from orchid flower to cured bean.

3. Coconut Groves and Indian Ocean Beaches

Just outside town, the Soavoanio coconut plantation is one of the largest in the world, spread across thousands of hectares. Sambava’s own coastline offers wide, palm-lined beaches with the Indian Ocean’s warm waters, popular for swimming and surfing alike.

4. Sava Region Culture

The town’s weekly markets, such as the Tuesday market at Antaimby, give a real taste of daily Sava life, shaped by the Tsimihety and Betsimisaraka communities. The blend of Malagasy tradition, vanilla-trade history, and French colonial influence gives Sambava a character all its own.

5. Rivers, Reserves, and Adventure

The Lokoho and Bemarivo rivers, which both drain into the Indian Ocean near Sambava, offer relaxed boat trips through rice paddies and forest scenery. Nearby, the Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve and the small Antanetiambo Nature Reserve add more chances to spot lemurs, including the haunting calls of the indri, away from the crowds.

Travel Logistics for Sambava

Getting to Sambava

Sambava has its own airport and is connected to the rest of Madagascar mainly by air, with a long and rugged coastal road as the overland alternative. Here’s how travelers typically get there.

Fly to Sambava from Antananarivo

Madagascar Airlines operates near-daily direct flights from Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo to Sambava Airport (SVB). The flight covers roughly 580 km and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes aboard an ATR 72 turboprop, making it by far the fastest and most reliable way to reach the region.

Seasonal Regional Connections

Depending on the season, Sambava also has connections to Toamasina (Tamatave), Maroantsetra, and Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), which makes it easy to combine a Sambava trip with other stops along Madagascar’s northeast coast.

Overland Route via Vohémar

For travelers seeking a coastal road adventure, the route from Ambilobe through Vohémar down to Sambava has been passable again since 2022. It’s a long, rugged multi-day drive best suited to a sturdy 4×4 and an experienced driver.

The Road to Andapa and Marojejy

The RN3b connects Sambava to Andapa, passing right by the entrance to Marojejy National Park. This road is essential for anyone planning to hike the park, and is best traveled with a private driver familiar with local conditions.

Private Drivers for Plantation and Park Visits

Whether you’re heading to a vanilla plantation, the coconut groves, or Marojejy’s park office, a private driver makes the trip far easier and lets you stop at markets and viewpoints along the way.

Local Transport Around Town

Within Sambava, taxi-motos (motorcycle taxis) are the quickest way to get around, and small boats ferry passengers across the creek to the Antaimby district for a few hundred Ariary.

It’s recommended to book your flights and transfers in advance, especially in the dry season from April to May and September to December, when conditions for visiting Marojejy are best. We’re a couple who have just returned from a wonderful day trip from Antananarivo, out to Andasibe and back to see lemurs and chameleons. MadaAssist organised everything, starting with pickup and drop off back to our hotel, and a visit to three venues that were all amazing: Mitsinjo Park (for lemurs in the wild), Vakona Reserve (also called Lemur Island – for lemurs again), and Peyrieras Reserve (for chameleons plus more). All three venues were amazing, at each an English-speaking guide was made available and all entrance fees taken care of. Our driver was awesome as well – he had to do a lot of driving as its 3-4 hours drive just to get to Andasibe. All we needed to do was bring water for ourselves, money for tips for the guides (which we were more than happy to give as each one gave us an amazing experience) and money for lunch (we had an awesome pizza in Andasibe). A huge thank you to MadaAssist who made the whole booking process easy, contacted us prior to the day to reassure us all was on track and followed us up afterwards to make sure we were happy. This was a totally seamless experience. Thank you everybody we communicated with at MadaAssist!

We booked our car with a driver in Madagascar online through Mada-Assist, and we certainly do not regret it. Everything was arranged down to the last detail. After a flight from Antananarivo to Tulear, we drove back to Antananarivo over 15 days, passing through the beautiful nature parks. Our driver, Romeo, turned out to be not only a reliable and careful driver but also an excellent guide. He spoke very good English, in addition to French and Malagasy. He truly knew everything about Madagascar and knew good local guides at every place we visited. He also arranged several excellent hotels for us in places that were not listed on Booking.com. He was there every day with a big smile. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We can therefore wholeheartedly recommend MadaAssist. And be sure to ask for Romeo!
