About

Sambava and the SAVA Region: A Birding Hotspot in Northeast Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the world’s great birding destinations, with over 280 recorded bird species and an endemism rate exceeding 50%. The northeastern corner of the island — encompassing Sambava and the surrounding SAVA region — is particularly rich, as the transition between coastal wetlands, lowland forest, and the high-altitude rainforest of Marojejy creates a diversity of habitats in close proximity.

Around Sambava itself, birders can target species in secondary forest, riverine vegetation, paddy fields, and the beach strip. The road toward Manantenina and Marojejy opens up primary forest habitats with specialities like the helmet vanga, the scaly ground-roller, and the velvet asity. Inside Marojejy, the rare and striking blue coua and the small-billed asity can be found, along with the endemic Marojejy type species sought by visiting ornithologists.

Local guides with detailed knowledge of bird calls, behavior, and nesting locations significantly improve sighting rates, especially for shy forest species. Dawn departures yield the greatest activity, and combining birding with lemur and chameleon spotting makes for a full and rewarding natural history day in the Sambava region.

I prebooked a taxi from an airport to city center. You start off by talking to a bot, but they quickly switch to a person who gives you a quotation in no time. Everything works smoothly. I'd recommend it and I will most likely use it again.

Excellent. Highly recommended. We communicated with Mada Assist for several weeks to plan our trip. We finally booked two 4WD vehicles with drivers through them: one for three days in Andasibe and another for ten days in Morondava, Tsingy, and Belo sur Mer. The drivers, Rojo and Louis, were excellent, efficient, yet very safe and punctual. The vehicles were in very good condition and cleaned daily. Truly a positive experience. I would use Mada Assist again without hesitation.

A large team means there's always someone available to answer your questions. They are helpful, attentive to your needs, and efficient in their procedures and research. They address your concerns with great kindness. I've been hunting in Madagascar for 45 years, every year, and will now use them for my future trips. I commend them wholeheartedly. Claude
