Discover the coelacanth and marine biodiversity of the Mozambique Channel
Visit Tuléar’s Musée de la Mer, run by the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines (IHSM) at the University of Toliara, and see one of the world’s few preserved coelacanths — a prehistoric fish caught near Saint Augustin in 1995 — alongside hundreds of regional shells, corals, fish, and reef species. Add a local guide for translation and context, and combine your visit with a stop at Toliara’s shell market or Mahafaly funerary art collection.
Great for individuals, families, or small groups interested in marine science and southern Madagascar’s culture. Museum hours are limited since it operates within a working research institute, so message our local booking managers on WhatsApp for a free consultation to confirm opening times and plan your visit.
The Story Behind Tuléar’s Musée de la Mer
The Musée de la Mer, also known as the Musée Rabesandratana after the respected former director of Tuléar’s marine research station, is part of IHSM, heir to a marine research station founded in 1961. Its centerpiece is a coelacanth — a “living fossil” fish once thought extinct for millions of years — caught in the waters off Saint Augustin in 1995 and preserved on permanent display.
Beyond the coelacanth, the collection spans hundreds of species drawn from the reefs of the Mozambique Channel: mollusks, crustaceans, corals, algae, reptiles, and a regional butterfly collection, offering a compact overview of the marine biodiversity studied by IHSM’s researchers.
Because it operates within an active university research institute rather than a large tourist attraction, the museum keeps modest and sometimes irregular hours, so a booking ahead of time helps ensure access. It pairs naturally with a stop at Toliara’s Vezo shell market or a visit to see Mahafaly funerary art nearby.
