Anakao: An Authentic Whale Watching Experience on Madagascar’s Remote Southwest Coast

Anakao is a traditional Vezo fishing village located on Madagascar’s southwest coast, south of Tuléar (Toliara), accessible by a scenic boat ride of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours or by 4×4. The village sits along a sheltered bay with turquoise waters, coral reefs, and wide sandy beaches that remain largely unspoiled by mass tourism.

Between July and September, humpback whales migrate through the warm waters of Madagascar’s southwest coast, and the area around Anakao is one of the recognized spots where these whales can be observed. The southwest region sees significantly fewer visitors than Nosy Be or Sainte-Marie, offering a tranquil and intimate setting for watching whales breaching, tail-slapping, and caring for their calves in the Indian Ocean.

Local Vezo fishermen and guides, who have lived alongside these waters for generations, lead many of the tours from traditional pirogues or small motorboats. After whale watching, the nearby coral reef and the protected lagoon offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. The remoteness of Anakao, combined with its authentic local character, makes it a standout destination for travelers who want to experience Madagascar’s whale watching season away from the crowds.
