Ifaty: A Quieter Corner of Madagascar for Humpback Whale Watching

Ifaty is a small coastal village situated approximately 27 km north of Tuléar (Toliara) along Madagascar’s southwest coast. The village is best known for its long white-sand beaches, the Reniala baobab reserve, and its coral reef – but between July and September it also becomes one of Madagascar’s lesser-known whale watching destinations.

Each year, humpback whales migrating from Antarctica split into two groups upon reaching Madagascar: one group heads to Île Sainte-Marie on the east coast, while the other moves to the southwest and northwest, including the waters off Ifaty. These whales arrive for breeding season, and pods can be observed in significant numbers, often with mothers and their calves.

The shallow turquoise lagoon protected by the coral reef makes boat departures relatively accessible. After whale watching, many visitors combine the excursion with snorkeling on the reef, which hosts a variety of marine life including fish, sea turtles, and starfish. The area around Ifaty and Tuléar sees far fewer tourists than Nosy Be or Sainte-Marie, making it a rewarding destination for travelers seeking a more intimate wildlife encounter.
