The overland journey involves the RN4 from Mahajanga to Antananarivo (approximately 570 km, 10–12 hours), followed by a second long leg heading northeast through Tamatave and along the coast to Maroantsetra (approximately 580 km, 16–20 hours on difficult roads). Total overland travel time exceeds 27 hours spread over at least 2–3 days.

For this reason, a flight connection via Antananarivo is strongly recommended. Madagascar Airlines operates regular flights from Antananarivo to Maroantsetra (WMN), with a flight time of approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Combined with the Mahajanga–Tana leg by road or flight, most travelers reach Maroantsetra within one full travel day.

Excellent. Highly recommended. We communicated with Mada Assist for several weeks to plan our trip. We finally booked two 4WD vehicles with drivers through them: one for three days in Andasibe and another for ten days in Morondava, Tsingy, and Belo sur Mer. The drivers, Rojo and Louis, were excellent, efficient, yet very safe and punctual. The vehicles were in very good condition and cleaned daily. Truly a positive experience.
